Biography

Alan Brown, Canada's first professionally trained pediatrician, joined the staff of the Hospital for Sick Children in 1915, and by 1920 had succeeded in reducing its infant mortality rate by 50 percent.  Although his autocratic style made him more feared than loved by staff and students, Brown was instrumental in establishing the discipline of pediatrics in Canada and transforming HSC into a world-class children's research and treatment facility.
