Clifford Ash was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1909 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta. In 1934, Ash was awarded a medical doctor degree from the University of Toronto and, after an internship, served in the Indian Medical Service in Bangalore, Madras, and Cannamore, India for two years. After returning to Canada in 1938 and training at Toronto General Hospital, he received a diploma in radiology from U of T and went on to become a radiologist at TGH. He traveled as a fellow, studying cancer therapy in the U.K., Norway, France, Sweden, Denmark, and Holland for a year, and in 1950, returned to Toronto to become Director of the Ontario Cancer Institute, where he stayed for 18 years. During his appointment, the institute achieved worldwide recognition.
Dr. Clifford Ash died in 1981 at the age of 72.
