Biography

Duncan Archibald Graham was appointed to the University of Toronto in 1919 as chair and professor of medicine.  He kept this position for the next 28 years, during which he converted the Faculty into a “training ground for medical scientists that was to profoundly influence medical education throughout English-speaking Canada” (Source).  Graham accomplished this by weeding out faculty he found to be unsuitable for the position and who would not implement his policies, by reorganizing “patient care and teaching in the medical wards of Toronto General Hospital with a logical efficiency that had not existed before,”… and by “challenging his students for their capacity for deductive reasoning” (Source).
